Howard Johnson

This former “motel” located in the geographic center of Quincy MA was in need of serious upgrades. The Ownership, Giri, Inc., wanted to rebuild and renovate a tired one story mid-century structure and double the room count. Although well intended as an addition and renovation, serious structural issues resulted in an almost total rebuild on the existing footprint in phases. To enclose circulation spaces and present as a modern hotel, the façade extension resulted in a light filled hallway accentuated by large bays and expansive fenestration. The linear nature of the plan was a direct response to the site characteristics. A centralized lobby and amenity space was created and a residential style aesthetic helped to bring the elongated plan some character and scale. The Howard Johnson Hotel is an iconic brand and one of the last under the flag in the US. Guest rooms have a nostalgic décor and all the modern amenities. A number of the rooms are large suites with kitchens and living areas.
